Just 1 month away!
Hey Oldtimers,

It's hard to believe but draft day is just a month away. The board is working hard on getting things ready for this year which includes the draft, jerseys, securing supplies and equipment as well as yes planning for the return of our charity golf tournament and year end banquet!

We are hosting the new player evaluation February 19th and draft day is March 4th.

We will encourage you all (if you can) to join us after the draft to meet your brand new shiny 2023 team! If you cannot join that is ok as your team will likely hold some BP sessions before the season starts and if they don't we will be hosting the league stag at the legion the week before the season starts.

While it seems like it a few months away the season will be starting in no time!

We do still require some people to sign up as well as 1 set of captains. As well, if you are already signed up and not paid you would have received an invoice from Dale, please ensure you pay that to confirm your spot.

BOSL President

President's Message 2023
Hello Burlington Oldtimers!

If you are not aware we just hosted our AGM this past Tuesday and we have voted in your 2023 Board of directors. We had a healthy attendance who voted in your 9 board members.

I’d like to welcome the newest board members in no particular order:

Erwin Mendoza
Chris Waters
Mark Riley
Grant Connelly
David Quinn

I’d like to welcome back in no particular order:

Dale Latendresse
Kevin Roseneck
Brad Hazledine

And a huge thank you to Brian Bishop, Mike Maycock and Scott Sinclair for the support on the board for the last several years, we look to take the items we have learned and carry them over to 2023.

I was appointed president by the current board members. Thank you all for having the trust in me to run this league with all of your support! For those who do not know me……shame on you….and those that do……I’m sorry Smile

I have been with the BOSL since 2014 and have been a captain and board member and sometimes both at the same time since 2016. My involvement and level of devotion to this league and membership is hopefully transparent to everyone but if not you will see that this year. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to reach out.

The board's involvement with the league’s future is never completed and we are looking to start the 2023 discussions about the season next week. The first action items are discussing our local charity for 2023 so if you have any suggestions please reach out to me so we can discuss it.

We will be looking for captains this year as we want to get back to 16 teams so if you are looking to run a team please let me know.

BOSL President

Mid Season Tournament Wrap Up
Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to send everyone a note to thank all of you for a great weekend!! Other than the wind on Friday the weather couldn't have been better.

Vanderhout Flooring took home the Championship over Carson Law in a nail biter. Physio Links Rehab came out on top in the Consolation round over Verway Automotive. Congratulations to the 2 winners!

Everyone seemed to be having a great time and we received positive feedback from everyone. Special thanks to the Board of Directors for the planning and execution of the Tournament. For a first time Tournament Director, Brad Hazeldine did an amazing job. There were also quite a few members who volunteered their time to help with diamond set up and tear down. We also have the late nighters who help the Servers pack up at the end of each day. I want to thank all of you for your help. A special thanks to Mike Drexler for spending both Friday and Saturday night at the park as our security. Mike also donated all of the Auction items which raised money for the Burlington Food Bank.

As for the Burlington Food Bank, we raised $707 from the auction and we expect $120 from the Can Collection!! The Food Bank wanted me to thank everyone again for their food and money donations on Saturday.

I had the honour to present some long service award over the weekend as well. During COVID we had a quite members reach milestones. We had 11 members receive their 15 Year Pins. We also had some incredible milestones. We had 4 members reach 25 years with the BOSL. Congrats to Mike (Moose) Wright, Jeff Chapman, Norm Poyton and Randy Petrie for their 25 years of service. We also had 3 members reach 30 years!! Congrats to Jeff Palmer, Greg Moore and Richard Krummenacher. All 7 of these recipients have either served on the Board and/or Captained for many years. Their dedication to the BOSL is the reason the league is what it is today.

The Board will be conducting a tournament debrief in the next couple of weeks. We acknowledge that some of the scheduling could be improved and we will be looking at it for the Year End Tournament.

I hope everyone recovers quickly from all of the injuries and sore muscles! Thanks again for a drama free weekend. See you out there on the diamond soon.

Season Opening Update #3
Dear BOSL Members,
The draft is a month away!!

Parks have been firmed up and plans are being made for the tournaments. With things opening up we’re optimistically hoping for back to normal.

As of today, our numbers haven’t improved since the last update, despite advertising efforts. Since registration is low at this point, we have no choice but to run this year with a max of 14 teams. Even at 14 teams we only have enough for 13 players per team. Keep in mind that we still do not have enough captains, even for 14 teams. We currently only have 12 sets of captains so we’re looking for 2 more. As I mentioned in the last update, we had quite a few captains step down after last year. We still need some members to step up and consider volunteering for this year. We are looking for captain pairs or singles. If you are interested in captaining for the 2022 season, please contact me at smsinclair1966@gmail.com or Steve Bourke at crazycanuckeh@gmail.com.

Finally, we have quite a few players that have registered but not paid. I would like to remind everyone that if you’re not paid, or at least made arrangements with the Treasurer, you will not be eligible for the draft. Also, at this point in the year it’s first come first serve for the draft. This means that if we get more players than openings for the draft, those players that have paid the latest will be added to the waitlist. If we don’t get enough captains OR any registered players back out between now and the draft, the possibility of a 12 team league is very likely. If we end up at 12 teams, the waitlist will be long. Please get your payment in asap by e-transfer to treasurer@bosl.ca to ensure your place in the draft.

I hope everyone stays safe and looking forward to seeing all of you soon.

2022 Ramp Up
Dear BOSL Members,
Just a quick update on league business. Looks like things are trending that we’ll be fully open for a May start to the season!

We are currently firming up our park permits for 2022. The parks open on May 10 so our season will begin on that date. We’re making plans for the tournaments and we have received confirmation that our weekends have been approved. The Mid Season tournament will be held on June 17, 18 & 19. The Year End Tournament will take place on September 9, 10 & 11. The one-day BOSL Charity tournament is scheduled for Saturday August 6th. Once again, we are trying to get all games scheduled on Tuesdays and Thursdays. As you might guess, many leagues in Burlington are vying for diamond time so this might be difficult thing to get, but we’re trying.

One concerning issue we currently have is registration numbers. Our numbers are quite a bit behind where they should be at this point in the year. We are considering some advertising campaigns, but we need everyone’s help in recruiting. Due to the current membership numbers we are pushing the draft day to Saturday April 2nd to give us more time to recruit. The location of the draft is TBD but we have a couple of options. If we don’t get enough membership to field 16 teams, we are contemplating a 14 team league for 2022.

If we happen to get enough players for 16 teams, we still do not have enough captains.

We still have 2 Board positions open as well. If anyone is interested in being on the Board of Directors, there is still time to volunteer. Anyone that is interested can submit their name and the current Board will approve their appointments. If you are interested or have any questions about the Board responsibilities, please reach out to me.

I hope everyone stays safe and looking forward to seeing all of you soon.

AGM and Playoff Update
Good Morning Everyone,

A quick update on the Annual General Meeting. We have set the date for the AGM to be held on Thursday October 28, 2021 at 7:00 pm. The AGM is held every year to present the status of the league, financial updates, Board of Director election and proposed Bylaw amendments. You must be a member in Good Standing for 2022 to vote on any Bylaw amendments or vote on the Board of Directors. This means you must be registered for the 2022 season.

2022 Board of Directors - We have a few current Board members who will not be running for re-election. If you are interested in running for the Board of Directors, please refer to the Election Process in the Bylaw section on the web site. To submit your name for consideration you have until October 14, 2021 to do so. Please send your notice by e-mail to me directly at smsinclair1966@gmail.com. The voting and counting process will be the same as last year.

Bylaw Amendments - Again, please refer to the Bylaw section on the web site for the process to submit an amendment request. Same deadline applies, Bylaw Amendment requests must be submitted by October 14, 2021 and sent to me as well.

Once again, due to COVID restrictions, we will need to hold the meeting virtually. More instructions will follow on how we will manage the meeting. Since we need to send invite links out to all of those who would like to attend, I would ask that you respond to me by e-mail that you would like to be added to the invite list.

We will also be looking for non-Board volunteers to assist with the counting of votes. If you are interested in helping out, please send me an e-mail.

Playoffs - Great job to everyone getting round 1 completed. This week's weather doesn't look great but please remember that playoffs are rain or shine!! Only the City can cancel games by pulling permits or the Umpires can cancel games due to lightening or dangerous field conditions. We are working on contingency plans to make up any cancelled games, should they occur. It may mean back to back days, double headers, different parks or even different days. Lets hope it doesn't happen but we are working on it in advance to minimize the impact.

Good luck to everyone in Round 2 and thanks for your patience and understanding this year. It's been a challenging season to get completed but we're almost there.

Scott Sinclair

Shave a beard for the food bank
Michael Drexler Jr AKA Drex, AKA Junior, AKA Drexy has offered to shave his beard if we can reach $1000 in donations for the foodbank!

We will use the month of September to collect donations and on our last game whether we make it to the finals or not we will live stream the shaving of his miraculous beard!

Help us reach this goal by donating any dollar amount you are comfortable with to treasurer@bosl.ca if you cannot etransfer please make contact with myself with your cash donation and I will make arrangements to etansfer the amount.

We will keep the overall donations a secret so everyone can be surprised.

Playoff Update
Greetings Everyone,

The draw for the Playoff POD seeding was conducted yesterday by the Board. The website has been updated to show the first round POD's and the updated schedule. PLEASE NOTE: Every team's schedule will have changed to reflect the new playoff schedule. Second round game schedules will depend on the results of the first round so these haven't been determined yet. We would ask that everyone review the new schedules. Also, Captains - please review the schedule with all of your teams.

Playoff games begin Wednesday September 8, 2021.

Please be reminded of some playoff rules:

Maximum innings of any game is 7. Therefore, game ends at time (90 minutes, no new inning after 75 minutes) or 7 innings, whichever comes first.
Plus or Minus tie breaker is in effect so the home team will bat in the last inning if leading by less than 8 runs. Maximum plus/minus is 8 so the home team would only bat until they reach an 8 run advantage.
Coin flip to held by the umpire to determine home and visitors. 6:30 games are to share responsibility of diamond setup.

Replacement Players:

Historically we do not allow replacement players in the tournament playoff format. Given that rosters are reduced this year AND we are playing a midweek playoff, we are going to allow replacements. The allowance of a replacement will be as follows:

Any team needing a replacement will only get 1 player. If a team has 9 players showing up, no replacement, they borrow a catcher. If a team has 8 players showing up, they borrow a catcher from the other team and qualify for on replacement. If a team has 7 players showing up, they borrow a catcher from the other team and they qualify for one replacement (must play with only 9 fielders). If a team only has 6 players confirmed, they forfeit. If a team asked for a replacement but 9 roster players show up for the game, the replacement player IS NOT ALLOWED to play. The team will simply borrow a catcher.

Replacements will only be supplied from the Pool list and be approved by the Membership Committee. If any team uses a Non approved replacement, the game will be forfeited. The replacement provided will be a player as close to the AVERAGE rating of the players that are going to miss the game.

To request a replacement, Captains must contact the membership committee 24 hours before your game starts. Same day requests will not be addressed so please advise your captains as soon as possible if you are going to miss any games.

If anyone is interested in joining the replacement pool that isn't already on the list, please contact the Membership Committee.

The teams that finish first in the Championship and Consolation side playoffs will receive the usual tournament playoff award.

Good luck everyone and see you on the diamond!!

Season Update #5
Greetings Everyone,

We are officially at the half way point of the season. By all indications everyone is enjoying the time back on the field and the fun and fellowship of the BOSL. We have experienced great weather with only a game or 2 lost. We've had a few injuries and withdraws but pool players are helping out to try and avoid forfeits.

Playoffs - Due to popular demand, we have made the decision to conduct a playoff format for the month of September. The playoff format will be the same format as our regular tournament style playoff. By that I mean, we will conduct a round robin tournament but games will be played on our regular week nights. After the first round, the top 2 teams from each pod will go the Championship side of the next round robin and the other 2 teams will go to the Consolation side.
The top 2 teams from each side will play for the championship. We will be build a small buffer in to the schedule to accommodate any games lost due to weather. The finals would take place on Thursday September 30.
We still have a few things to work out but the Board is working on a schedule. More to come on this.

COVID Update - Everyone is doing a great job with the on line screener with only a few people neglecting or forgetting to complete this before every game. Some members have expressed concern over players not following COVID protocols. We would ask that you share these concerns with your captain and they can either deal with it directly with your teammates or with the other captains. If the captains need assistance from the Board, we will assist if required. The Board has created the protocols that allowed us to return to play but we are not at every game to police. The captains and individual members must follow them and enforce where necessary. It is not the Umpires job to enforce protocols.

Charity Donation - Thanks to the generosity of those members that donated their refund to the Burlington Food Bank we will be presenting them with a cheque for $8857. We will try to get over to the Food Bank in the next week or so to present the cheque.

Thanks for everyone's participation so far and please stay safe.

Scott Sinclair
BOSL President
