BOSL EVENTS – PINTS 4 PINTS CONTEST

***** Follow the Donor leaders here on our LEADERBOARD *****

This year, we'll do things a little differently.  Instead of being able to donate only at the Burlington clinic, we'll be handing out business cards with the league and team ID on them.  Donors just have to take one of those cards on their first visit of the season to the clinic of their choice, hand it to the receptionist at the time of the donation, and the rest will happen on their end.  No more sign-in sheets!  We'll get those business cards to the captains on or before the night of the opening stag, so everyone will have a chance to give them to the friends and family who wish to help out this year

It’s been demonstrated over and over that our league is pretty generous. We’ve raised and donated thousands of dollars every year to worthy causes. There’s no reason to expect that this will stop any time soon, because there will always be worthy causes in need of help. And we’ve found one more – one worth rolling up our sleeves for.

Starting on April 1, 2011, in cooperation with Canadian Blood Services, we will be having a league-wide competition, and we’re out for blood.

The team with the most donations (see below for details) by the end of August will win the prize we as softball players covet the most: beer, and lots of it.

1st Place = Keg of Beer from Better Bitters.
2nd Place = $100.00 worth of Gift Cards (Total) from Gator Teds/Judge and Jury.
3rd Place = $50.00 Gift Card from QBs.

How it will work:

  • At the time of your first donation of the season, just hand over the business card you were given (with the team and league ID on it) to receptionist at the clinic of your choosing.  They will forward the results on a monthly basis, and we’ll post them on the website.
  • Friends and relatives can also donate on behalf of your team.  Just give them one of the business cards, and have them present it when they first donate.
  • Round up all of the first time donors you can for your team, because their first donations are worth double. The idea here is to get people who aren’t donating now to start, and get those who are donating to donate more.

And that’s it. There’s enough time for everyone to donate whole blood three times during the time the contest will run, so let’s all chase after that prize!

Canadian Blood ServicesWhy we need blood donors

  • Over 900,000 donations per year are required to meet hospital demand in Canada, and increasing by about 2% per year.
  • While about 50% of Canadians can give blood, fewer than 2% do.
  • Blood is a product that can literally mean the difference between life and death for those who need it.

Who can donate

  • Anyone between the ages of 17 and 71 (or 61 for first-time donors) who is in good health and feeling well at the time of donation.
  • Have a look at the second page of the Blood Donor questionnaire. It’s worth noting that while answering “yes” for questions 15-30 will disqualify a potential donor, the same is not necessarily true for questions 1-14. If in doubt, ask the contest administrator (Steve Rowsell, on Great Lakes Hydraulics) or call 1-888-2-DONATE and get the official word.

Richard's 100thAbout the donation process

It’s really not that difficult. The whole thing takes about an hour, and for most people the most painful part is the series of mildly embarrassing questions the nurse asks during the private screening process. The nurses who do the actual poking are very good at what they do, making the needle insertion smooth and almost painless. Donating on a game day isn’t recommended, though the day before a game shouldn’t impair anyone’s performance.
