March 6 to May 1, 2010 - Chubby Challenge
Hello everyone: As you all know this past winter I lost my wife Mary Jane to Cancer and she spent her final days at the Carpenter House Hospice in Burlington. They are a charity driven organization and look for support from the community. So, as they do not have things like the walks and run for the cure etc. my daughter and I wanted the opportunity to give back to them for their help with Mary Jane. So I have come up with a little contest that I was going to offer to my inner circle of friends but thought it may be something some of you wanted to participate in. I am calling this the Chubby Challenge and it gives you the chance to get into game playing weight or into those Spring and Summer clothes hanging in your closet. At the same time give toward a very good organization and win some money all at the same time so it is a triple win.
This is how it will work
Weigh in day is Saturday March 6th and you have until Saturday May 1st (approx 8 weeks) to loose 7% of your body weight Example, so without using names or personal data let's just say for example sake, If Kevin Costello WAS currently 200 pounds and lets say IF Kevin Costello wanted to take this challenge Kevin would need to loose 14 pounds to meet the Chubby Challenge goal. Now IF Kevin wanted to loose more so he could be in line for the bonus prize and say loose 25 pounds (12% of his body weight) then he would be well on the way to a $50 prize and a better ball season, not to mention a happier Patty. PLEASE NOTE I am NOT saying Kevin Costello is at 200 pounds, nor am I saying he is over weight at all, or that his wife Patty is unhappy with his weight.
Kevin's name was used strictly as an example there was no intent to tell the entire ball league that Kevin may be a little bit chubby.
The cost of this is $50.00, the total purse is determined by the number of people who participate 50% of the purse will go to the Carpenter House Hospice in Burlington. The balance will be split among ALL those who mange to meet their goal of 7% by May 1st. ONLY the official weight taken on March 6th and May 1st will be considered and used to determine the winners. As a secondary prize of $50 will be warded to the person who looses the highest % of body weight above and beyond the required amount. If you make the required 7% you will get back at minimum $25.00, you will loose some unneeded weight and you will be helping a charity in the community. ALL weights will be in shirt pants and socking feet NO SHOES ( no lead weights in your pockets at the weigh in)

March 12th at 9am to March 14th at 4pm at the Burlington Golf Club – Terry Fox foundation Fundraising Event
Peter Woodhouse and a number of curlers will be attempting to set a new Guinness World Record for the longest continuous curling game. The current record is held by a group in Northern Ontario and set at 50 hours last year.
I am an alternate and if not required will be part of the support group for the on ice curlers. We will be attempting a game of 55 hours (10% more) which should let the record stand for a little while.
We start with two teams of 5 players. A player can be substituted for after each 2 hour segment. The event will be recorded by video cam continuously and all scores, players names (for each two hour segment); number of ends are all documented, attested and finally notorized for the Guinness people. Once the event starts there can be no change of the ten original players or the attempt is finished. There is also the support group that is in charge of overseeing the event. This event is tying in with the 30th Anniversary of the Terry Fox run and one of the curlers has very strong connection with the Terry Fox foundation as a volunteer for many years.
Terry Fox’s brother will be one of the 10 curlers!
(I think it shows) how the league is giving back in its support by placing this event on the BOSL website. If anyone wishes to contribute to the Terry Fox foundation they can at their leisure make a donation.
Please drop by the Burlington Golf Club and visit the curling area to watch a World Record being set by a bunch of crazy curlers. More detailed information is attached here.
Sincerely, Peter Woodhouse
